Ankles hurting while running?

I know that I need new tennis shoes ASAP. The last few times I have gone running, the tendons (i'm assuming) in my ankle area have been in pain, and they have continued to hurt me in every day life like when i'm walking up and down stairs. When I get new tennis shoes should the pain subside? Even if I do get new tennis shoes this week should I stick to walk for a while instead of running? And for how long? I'm bothered by this because i'm trying to lose weight and shape up and I had a slack-off week last week and am ready to get back into gear
